Research Interests and Biography
Carolin Heizmann studied Human Factors (Master’s degree) at the Berlin Institute of Technology (Technische Universität Berlin) and Business Psychology at the Stuttgart Technical University of Applied Sciences (Bachelor’s degree). Since April 2024, she has held a research associate position at the Human-Technology Interaction Lab at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
Her research focuses on participatory and partaking-oriented approaches to Human-Technology Interaction in the context of digital health. She explores how AI systems, social robots, and neurotechnologies can be developed in alignment with human values, needs, and capabilities. With a background in cognitive ergonomics, user research, and medical technology, she investigates how psychological and contextual factors influence the acceptance, trust, and responsible use of automation in healthcare.
Her work draws on participatory and ethics-oriented design methodologies, such as Ethics-by-Design and Participatory Action Research, to foster inclusive, fair, and trustworthy technology development. She is particularly interested in questions of value alignment, the role of explanations in shaping user behavior and trust, and the impact of contextual variables on the use of intelligent systems.
