Areas of Research

Oliver Müller is Heisenberg Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Freiburg. Müller specializes in the fields of philosophy of technology, philosophical anthropology, and ethics.

He is interested in understanding how modern technologies shape our thinking, feeling, and acting, drawing on phenomenological and hermeneutical methods as well as on normative approaches in philosophy. In particular, Müller is investigating hybrid agencies in autonomous weapons systems, trust in human-robot interactions and the change of temporal structures in digitalization processes.

Furthermore, he initiated and heads Nexus Experiments, a platform that designs and curates participatory projects and events at the interface of science and art to foster public dialogue on the ethical and societal implications of technoscientific research.

Biography

Oliver Müller studied Philosophy and German Literature in Heidelberg, Hamburg, Venice, and at the Humboldt University in Berlin (M.A.). 2005 PhD (Humboldt-University) on Hans Blumenberg’s phenomenological anthropology. Since 2005 Research Assistant and Junior Research Group Leader (BMBF) and Principle Investigator in several projects on ethics of bio- and neurotechnologies at the University of Freiburg. Since 2012 Principal Investigator and Member in the Cluster of Excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools,
2012 ‘Habilitation’ in Philosophy, University of Freiburg (published as “Selbst, Welt und Technik” 2014).

2013-2015 Junior Research Group Leader in BrainLinks-BrainTools. 2015 Heisenberg Grant (DFG) and Deputy Professorship at the University of Koblenz-Landau, 2015-2017 Visiting Professorship at the ETH, Zürich. Since 2017 Full Professor of Philosophy (Heisenberg) at the University of Freiburg. Since 2018 Senior Fellow at Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) within the Research Focus/Saltus! Group “Responsible AI”. Since 2019 Responsible Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence livMatS, University of Freiburg.
