Prof. Wilfried Hinsch, as a philosopher, focuses in his presentation on discrimination based on relevant group membership with shared statistical features. Examples that are discussed are relevant features as ‘crime-proneness’ or ‘probability for credit default’; relevant group memberships may be defined in terms of ethnicity, gender, age, social class or place of residence. He argues that discriminating between persons based on statistical information often will be – rationally and morally – objectionable.

It has always been disputed under what conditions human decisions can be considered free. According to some positions, this requires the absence of causal determinants, while other positions do not. If freedom of will requires only rational insight and control, it would be compatible with full determination. This raises the question whether artificial intelligence can also have freedom of will.
Prof. Dr. Marcus Willaschek (*1962) has been Professor of Modern Philosophy at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main since 2003. He has conducted research at the universities of Harvard, Berkeley, UC San Diego, Keio (Tokyo), Osaka and others. He is a Principal Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence “Normative Orders” as well as a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Frankfurt Scientific Society.
