On August 4th, 2021, Dr. Philipp Kellmeyer and Patricia Gleim, from the Responsible AI research group at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) of the University of Freiburg, visited the care robot LIO (F&P Robotics) at the St. Marienhaus nursing home in Constance. At St. Marienhaus, which belongs to Caritas-Altenhilfe in the Constance region, a two-year project is currently underway in which the use of the assistive care robot is being tested in practice together with the University of Constance and the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences.
Representing the project, Stefanie Ebner, project manager at St. Marienhaus and assistant to the management, gave a tour of the facility. In addition to demonstrating the various functions and personally testing the interaction with LIO, it was also possible to observe the actual use in the residential areas of the nursing home.
The impressions from the observations were deepened by qualitative interviews, which the researchers conducted with employees of the house. In this way, the Responsible AI team will be able to gain insights into the interaction between employees, residents and the assistive care robot. The visit promoted the important exchange between science and practice.
